Robert Dowd makes Sheffield Steelers history with record-breaking 793rd point

It was an historic night in Guildford for Sheffield Steelers veteran Robert Dowd

Sheffield Steelers captain Robert Dowd has become the club’s all-time leading points scorer after moving beyond the long-standing record held by Ron Shudra.

Dowd entered Sunday’s game at Guildford level with Shudra on 792 career points after a four-point performance in Saturday’s 6-0 victory over Coventry Blaze.

He then scored during Sheffield’s dramatic 5-4 shootout win over the Flames to move onto 793 points and take sole possession of top spot in the club’s all-time scoring charts.

The goal came during another remarkable Steelers comeback, with Aaron Fox’s side recovering from 3-0 down to eventually win on penalty shots.

Dowd admitted afterwards that the result remained his immediate priority.

“It was brilliant,” he said.

“I thought we played very well tonight. Even though we were 3-1 down, I don’t think the scoreline really reflected how we played in that first period.

“We had a couple of lost coverages and they punished us for them, but we stuck to the game plan and it was a great bounce-back win for the boys.”

Dowd’s record-breaking moment came after he picked up the puck with speed and attacked the Guildford defence.

“We tried to catch them on the break and their D-man got a stick on it, but I was following up and got the puck with plenty of speed,” he explained.

“I managed to beat the defenceman wide and get a quick shot away high blocker.”

The goal was significant not only because it moved Dowd clear at the top of the Steelers scoring charts, but because of the player whose record he surpassed.

Shudra remains one of the most recognisable figures in Sheffield hockey history, and Dowd was quick to acknowledge what being mentioned alongside him means.

“It’s very cool,” said Dowd.

“To be in the same conversation as someone like Ron is really special.

“He’s a great human being, a great hockey player and an absolute legend of British hockey and Sheffield.

“To be talked about in the same sentence as Ron is really humbling and quite special.

“To finally get over the line with that record is a really cool feeling.”

The 19-season Steeler also made sure the puck from the historic goal was safely collected.

“I’ve got the puck,” he smiled.

Dowd now stands alone on 793 points — and counting.
