Sheffield United confirmed Sylvia’s passing, who was the widow of former Sheffield United chairman and football hero Derek, in a statement.

The Blades commended her for the ‘constant support’ she gave to her husband after his Sheffield Wednesday career was cut short when his infected leg had to be amputated.

In a message, the club said: “Staff at Sheffield United are saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs Sylvia Dooley, widow of former Blades chairman, Derek.

“They say that behind every great man is a great woman, and there was never a truer description of Sylvia.

“A constant source of support to her husband in the darkest of times, she supported him through the trauma the horrendous injury that finished his career at Sheffield Wednesday and changed his life forever.
