Sheffield Wednesday manager, Darren Moore, says that Southampton’s players spoke to him after the game about the quality of his side.

Wednesday took the Premier League outfit all the way to penalties in their midweek Carabao Cup clash, with Josh Windass giving them a deserved lead in the first half before James Ward Prowse’s penalty levelled things up.

The Saints went on to win 6-5 on penalties at St. Mary’s, but if the Owls had taken their first half chances then it could have been a very different result for the League One outfit.

For Wednesday, there were many positives to take from the game, and their manager thinks that if the hosts hadn’t named such a strong XI then it would be his side that were in the next round.

Speaking to The Star afterwards, Moore said, “The beautiful thing, really, is that we didn’t look out of place… We caused them problems.

“I’ve got the Southampton players coming off the pitch after the game saying, ‘Darren, this is a really good team, and you’ve taken us all the way today’.

“So there are accolades to the players from them - professional football to professional footballer. They know each other, some of their players know ours like ours know theirs, and they knew tonight that they’d been in a game.

“When I saw their line-up I said to our lads, ‘Credit to you’ because they didn’t take it lightly. And they were right, because if they’d put out anything less than they did then we’d have won the game.”

Wednesday now turn their attentions back to League One with Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
