The full-back, who will leave the club ahead of their next match against West Brom in midweek, replaced Julian Borner – injured with a dead leg – at half-time in the clash and put in a solid performance on the left of a three-man defence.

Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri are also leaving but did not feature in the matchday squad.

Monk joked that he would be trying to persuade Fox to stay on at the club but admitted there was very little chance, describing his decision to not play the rest of the season as ‘concrete’.

“I’ve loved working with him,” Monk told The Star. “I know he had a tough time before I came here. I spoke with him about that and tried to give he a new lease of life. He took that on board this season and has excelled with it.

“I’m hugely disappointed not to keep him here, but as I said earlier in the week, you have to respect the player’s decisions.

“It’s sad to lose him but that [playing today] typified his attitude and commitment to the group. He’s done that right up to the very last minute. That’s why he came on today and I think his performance showed that. We wish him the best in the future,” he continued.

“With what we’ve said, it’s pretty much in concrete, you never say never, but that’s the situation with the players who we’ve had those discussions with.

“We’re going into a tough period and it would be nice to have those players like Foxy, who has shown that attitude, but I have to respect their decision as well.

“My focus is on the team that has committed and is going forward.”

Asked whether the club was any closer to confirming the extensions of loan players Connor Wickham, Alessio Da Cruz, Josh Windass and Jacob Murphy, Monk said: “The paperwork has all been sent in and everything has been clarified with the league and that stuff. Hopefully it all gets signed off on Monday.”
