Garry Monk hails shift in changing room attitude after Sheffield Wednesday win at Bristol City

The win was their first on the road in the league of a second half of the season that has seen Monk regularly question the culture within the club.
After Wednesday’s last game on the road, a 5-0 defeat at Brentford, the Owls manager tore into that culture, maintaining that while it existed the club ‘would never be successful’.

Hide AdBut the three-month break from football has served the players well, Monk said, and though it is early days in his planned transformation of the club, he is encouraged by what he has seen.
“I can definitely sense that the majority of the group have reflected and used that period to get fitter,” he said. “But also to reflect on their own situations and their attitudes towards how they’re going to work.
“The culture of the football club is about how you train and approach each day. I’ve seen a big shift. Definitely a step forward in that regard, it needs more work and I’m not going to get ahead of myself, but that shift towards that attitude and mentality, I definitely see a progression in that.
“I said to the players that it will stand them in good stead. I spoke a lot about the fact that the culture and mentality needs to shift at this football club and the players that are here are trying to build towards that.”

Hide AdFive first team players will play no further part in the season as Monk attempts to launch a turnover in playing staff in a switch to a ‘younger, hungrier’ feel.
“We’ll have difficult moments in this run, for sure, even difficult results,” he said. “But what we want to get away from is where we saw a couple of five-nils and three-nils. We have to avoid those where we’re totally out of the game and didn’t have the attitude to show our best.
“It’s only a small step, it’s only two games, but it’s been a very pleasing two games.”
