It’s 31 years ago today since a band of Sheffield Wednesday players wrote themselves into the club’s folklore.
Against the odds, Second Division Wednesday beat a Manchester United team inching to the verge of greatness again in the League Cup final at Wembley, thanks to an iconic goal from John Sheridan.
To this day the Owls are the last non-top flight team to have won a major trophy in England.

9. CM - Danny Wilson
Joined Barnsley as a player in 1993 and started his managerial career there with success, before replacing Atkinson as Wednesday boss in 1998. Was manager of the Owls the season they were relegated from the Premier League two years later before doing well at Bristol City, MK Dons, Hartlepool and Swindon before jumping to the dark side with Sheffield United. Fell out with Trevor Francis and left Wednesday in 1993, signing for Derby County and later West Ham. Returned to his US homeland in 1996 at the outset of Major League Soccer and had great success with DC United, New England Revolution and Columbus Crew. Has since gone into coaching and has had Championship-winning success with USL side Greenville Triumph. Photo: Shaun Botterill
The greatest goalscorer in Wednesday's modern history stayed on at the club until 1997 when he was sold to Southampton for a club-record fee. He returned to Wednesday in 2013, doing media and ambassadorial work while coaching the Owls youth sides of which his son George was a bright prospect. One of the understated members of the side, Williams was involved in the deal that brought Mark Bright to Wednesday, heading the other way for Crystal Palace in 1995. Went on to play for Sunderland, Birmingham, Torquay and Southend before dropping into non-league playing and coaching. Now lives in Florida where he coaches in schools. Photo: Sheffield Newspapers
