Windass’ situation is one that is expected to drag on as he remains a target for several clubs in the Championship, with Stoke City, Fulham and Birmingham City amongst the others who are considering a move for him.

Now, after The Star reported that Wednesday’s current standpoint was that the 27-year-old was not for sale at any price, it is thought that the Owls have now turned down a second approach believed to be worth in the region of £1m.

The attacker has enjoyed a good spell at Hillsborough on a personal level, and built on a solid loan spell by joining the club on a permanent basis and going on to finish the 2020/21 season as their top scorer.

His form in blue and white – coinciding with Wednesday’s relegation – has understandably led to him becoming a wanted man from the league above, and it’s unlikely that the Lions will be the only club to try and test Wednesday’s resolve with regards to the former Wigan Athletic man.

Windass has one year left on his current Owls contract, but a one-year option on top of that means that Wednesday do very much hold the cards at this point in time and are unlikely to be under any pressure to sell – aside from the financial benefits of doing so.

It remains to be seen if Millwall will come back with a third offer following SWFC’s latest rebuke, but this transfer saga is certainly one that could rumble on for some time, especially as Wednesday continue to deal with off-the-field issues such as unpaid wages and a reported embargo.

Windass scored nine goals and grabbed six assists in Wednesday’s ultimately doomed 2020/21 season, and many fans had been looking forward to seeing what he could do in a Wednesday shirt against League One opponents if given the chance.

Wednesday return to Middlewood Road on Friday to begin preseason testing before heading out to Wales.
