Club captain, Barry Bannan has already said that this game is bigger than the 2016 trip to Wembley despite the Premier League carrot that dangled at the end of the game, and he’s right – because this time there is an entire club and livelihoods on the line.

And stand-in manager, who at this point may or may not be in Darren Moore’s place on the touchline against Derby County, was insistent that the Wednesday players are aware of the enormity of the occasion, saying that their work in training now needs to reflect on the field.

“We know what’s at stake,” he told the media. “It’s a game that we must go and win, it’s as simple as that. The players know that, we’re all well aware of it, and it’s been a good week’s training – now we just need to take that out onto the pitch.

“We want to get the three points, and we’ll be doing everything we can to achieve that. Like I say, it’s been a good working week… Personally it’s a massive, but that goes for everybody at the club. It’s a really big game for everybody concerned with the club.

“It’s massive, there’s no getting away from it. It’s a massive game, but one that we’re looking forward to.”

It’s probably the biggest game for Wednesday since May 2nd 2010 when they found themselves in very similar circumstances against Crystal Palace – things didn’t go their way that day, but what has come before won’t matter so much if they somehow get the job done.

He explained, “We’ve got a calendar in the office, and all the games were written on it. After each game one gets wiped off, and it was just there left on its own ‘Derby’. We spoke yesterday of how this long season, 45 games, just comes down to this game now.”

It does. It’s make or break now, do-or-die. Now we wait to see if they’re up to it.
