Sheffield Wednesday have announced Barry Bannan as their 2020/21 Player of the Season.

But despite all the social media comments and the push for a ‘protest’ vote in favour of Marriott – who has had a very difficult loan spell – the club has now named club captain, Barry Bannan as their 2020/21 Player of the Season.

The Owls skipper was one of the favourites to win the award alongside top scorer, Josh Windass, and has made it an award double after also claiming the Community Player of the Year gong.

A statement from the club today read, “Barry Bannan has been crowned the swfc.co.uk Player of the Year for 2020/21.

“The Owls skipper has led by example on and off the pitch this campaign having also scooped the club’s Community Player of the Year award. The energetic midfielder has been an ever-present in the Championship, starting each of our 45 games ahead of the season finale at Derby on Saturday.”

The reactions to Wednesday’s announcement, however, feature more comments about Marriott’s failure to win than they do congratulations for the club captain, despite the fact that Bannan is most definitely a deserved winner in what has been a season to forget in so many ways.

Bannan will make it 46 games out of 46 this weekend should he – as expected – feature in the survival decider against Derby County, and is the only player capable of achieving that feat this season when so many players have been dogged by injury concerns at some stage or another.
