Wayne Rooney, the now player-coach and captain of Derby County, has spoken for the first time about Sheffield Wednesday loanee, Jack Marriott.

Marriott joined Wednesday on loan from the Rams on deadline day, and was given the number nine shirt at Hillsborough, but now faces a lenghy spell on the sidelines after picking up a relatively severe injury.

Wednesday manager, Tony Pulis, suggested that Marriott would be out for around two months, and now Rooney has also been quoted as saying that he’ll ‘be out for 6-8 weeks’, but admitted that he’s unsure whether his loan will continue when he’s fit again.

Speaking to the media ahead of Derby’s trip to Middlesbrough this week, the former England international said, “I’m not sure what decision has been made in terms of if he goes back or stays at Derby. But we’ve spoken to Jack and said it’s important to get back fit. It’s a clean slate for everyone.”

Rooney’s comments follow Pulis confirming over the weekend that Marriott was unlikely to feature again in 2020, with the Wednesday manager saying, “Jack’s back at Derby, I think he’s long-term… He’s going to be long-term, obviously Flinty is long-term as well. So we’re not going to see either of those two.

“It was his calf I think, whatever it was it’ll be six or seven weeks I think.”

Marriott only played a handful of games for the Owls, and following Phillip Cocu’s Derby exit it may be that the club look to exercise their option to recall the forward in January.
