Update: The threadbare squad a worst-case scenario could see Sheffield Wednesday left with this season

Sheffield Wednesday could feasibly be reduced to a squad of just 14 senior outfield players – including teenagers Osaze Urhoghide and Alex Hunt – for the final weeks of their Championship campaign.

It’s a worst-case scenario, but like clubs across the division there is uncertainty over how their squad will look beyond the end of several permanent and loan contracts at the end of June.

A number of Championship players have refused to complete their contract with their current clubs, though that doesn’t appear to be an immediate concern for Wednesday.

Speaking to the media last week Owls boss Garry Monk said that no Owls player is yet to voice any concern over completing their contract – which would give Wednesday a full squad for the next two matches – and that all players who are out of contract at the end of June have been offered extensions to the end of the season.

Midfield man Kieran Lee is the only soon-to-be out-of-contract Wednesday player to have agreed to an extension as it stands.

The club appear confident of securing extensions to several soon-to-be out-of-contract players and are understood to have entered negotiations with the loanees Alessio Da Cruz, Jacob Murphy and Connor Wickham in an effort to maintain squad depth as the season rolls on into July.

The fitness of Wigan’s Josh Windass is being monitored after he suffered an injury that could see him out for the next three weeks. David Bates’ nightmare time with Wednesday appears to be over.

Wednesday take on Nottingham Forest in their restart curtain-raiser on Saturday. An eight-day rest follows before a gruelling run of eight matches in 24 days. A number of the club’s academy side have been called into first-team training and are expected to feature.

Contract extensions for Urhoghide and Joey Pelupessy were announced at the start of the month as was that of out-on-loan Matt Penney, though he’ll stay at St Pauli.

The confirmed July Owls squad so far:

Goalkeepers; Dawson, Wildsmith, Westwood Defenders; Palmer, Urhoghide, Odubajo, Iorfa, Lees, Borner Midfielders; Bannan, Pelupessy, Luongo, Hunt, Harris, Reach, Lee Strikers; Rhodes

Contracts up; Jones, Fox, Hutchinson, Nuhiu, Fletcher, Winnall, Forestieri

Loans up; Bates, Murphy, Da Cruz, Windass, Wickham
