UK Government keeping 'very close eye' on Dejphon Chansiri at Sheffield Wednesday

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy insists that the UK Government is keeping a ‘very close eye’ on the situation at Sheffield Wednesday under Dejphon Chansiri.

Wednesday’s plight is well-known now, with the Owls locked in a state of crisis due to the mismanagement of owner, Dejphon Chansiri, with the club unable to make any paid-for signings until 2027 and waiting to hear their fate after they - and Chansiri himself - were charged by the English Football League after late payments earlier in the year.

The end of each month brings with it question marks over whether people at the club will be paid on time, and this summer saw just two signings come in to aid Henrik Pedersen’s side despite a raft of exits - two of whom had their contracts terminated after not being paid on time.

Dejphon Chansiri has been warned once more

Nandy, who has spoken before about Wednesday’s situation, has issued another warning to Chansiri and any others like him, insisting that ‘change is coming’.

Speaking to the Culture, Media and Sport committee on Wednesday, she said that ‘if necessary, the football regulator can intervene in order to remove an owner who is threatening the future of the club’, and also spoke of her concern at the current state of things at Hillsborough.

She added: “And I would say, in relation to Sheffield Wednesday, the Government’s view is very strongly that football club owners are custodians of those clubs, and they have a responsibility to hand them on in better shape to the next owner and to the next generation of fans.

“In Sheffield Wednesday’s case, I am really extremely concerned about the current ownership and the lack of willingness to sell the club and invest in the club, something I’ve been discussing very closely with local MPs. The Government is keeping a very close eye on it and our message to those owners is that change is coming.”
