The true context of Dejphon Chansiri's claim that "Sheffield Wednesday is not that big"

A short video clip showing Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri commenting that “Actually, Sheffield Wednesday is not that big,” went viral on the internet to the delight of rival supporters.

But the fact is that, answering questions on his long-term commitment to the club, the soundbite was taken at the end of an explanation around the club’s ownership and that Wednesday – a club now more than two decades outside the Premier League – are not one of the more affluent business propositions in European football.

Using 2018 denounced rumours of interest from the Red Bull sports franchise as an example, Chansiri said: “I’ve been here less than six years but I think I love [Sheffield Wednesday] and I think I try to do the good thing for this club more than, say, someone who wasn’t here for long.

“I never say anything bad, I never do anything wrong for this club.

“But if the fans want me to leave and they want to buy me out, then I will sell for them. If they want me to leave, I don’t mind. I know what I am doing.

“If you think you can have a better owner, that’s fine,” he went on.

“Some try to say Red Bull want to buy it. I told them many times, how you think of your club [as a] very big club.

“You think too much. Red Bull are not going to think about the Championship anyway.

“If they buy, they buy Premier League. Sometimes you think too big about yourselves. Actually, Sheffield Wednesday is not that big.”
