The Sheffield Wednesday youngsters out to impress Darren Moore in Wales
Sheffield Wednesday begun their preseason in Wales today as Darren Moore begins preparations for 2021/22, and a handful of youngsters are thought to have made the trip alongside the seniors.
The Owls don’t have the biggest squad as things stand, with a number of senior players leaving over the summer and Moore yet to bring in any new seasons as the club try to deal with the matter of a transfer embargo and the issue of unpaid players.
So with that in mind, their 10-day camp that got underway today offers a big opportunity for several youngsters to stake a claim for a place in the manager’s plans, with The Star understanding that several U23 players have made the trip out west.
Along with the plethora of youngsters who have been considered first teamers for some time now – such as Alex Hunt, Ciaran Brennan and Co. – it’s also thought that a handful of other players are part of the camp in an attempt to assess their levels ahead of the new campaign.
It’s understood that Charles Hagan and Josh Dawodu, who recently signed new contracts to remain at Hillsborough, were due to be part of the travelling squad, as were fellow youngsters, Ryan Galvin, Korede Adedoyin and Liam Waldock.
All five players were part of Lee Bullen’s U23s last year, but have the opportunity to step up and show Moore and his technical team what they’re all about now following the drop into League One.
Full backs, Dawodu and Galvin, have a decent shot and becoming real first team members at present given the lack of depth in their positions, while attackers, Hagan and Adedoyin, could bring some real pace into the setup if given the chance.
With Waldock, he’s already been touted as a good option in central midfield going forward, and showed a snippet of what he’s capable of when given a start in the Carabao Cup against Fulham last season.
Moore and his team arrived in Wales on Sunday evening, and got to work on Monday morning as preparations truly got underway. They play Celtic in their first preseason friendly on July 7th.
