Stockport County manager excited for 'amazing' Hillsborough trip against 'big guns' Sheffield Wednesday
The Owls and Stockport clash at Hillsborough on Saturday
Stockport County manager Jimmy McNulty is looking forward to an ‘amazing trip’ to Hillsborough to face the ‘big guns’ of Sheffield Wednesday.
McNulty, who led Rochdale to promotion from the National League via the play-offs after an epic title battle with York City last season, took over from Dave Challinor at The Hatters this summer and has guided them to eighth in the table so far.
“Amazing trip in a cauldron of a stadium that's going to be great to be part of,” he told BBC Radio Manchester ahead of the weekend. “They are the pace-setters. They are pretty much neck-and-neck with some of the guys who you would expect to be there. Big guns in this division. They're a good team, certainly have some player power, and they have heavy guns for this division. We are definitely mindful of everything they're capable of producing. Definitely respectful of it because they're a very good team. Their points return thus far would suggest that they are one of the best teams thus far. We are of course looking to imprint our own mindset and mentality on the game to go to Hillsborough and take three points.”
Stockport are the highest goalscorers in the division and came in for lots of praise from their fans for the way they attacked Leicester City last weekend despite being edged out 4-3. The Hatters have already won at Plymouth Argyle and Wigan Athletic but have conceded 10 goals as well, which is the most out of anyone in the top 10 of League One.
McNulty said they could have scored six goals against Leicester and that they will continue to attack, which could make for an exciting and open game on Saturday. He added: “We want to attack every single team, and we want to attack as much as possible in as many phases as possible, and even when the opponent has the ball we're thinking about how we can take that ball back so that we can attack again. Because I believe that's what I was brought here to do.
“I actually believe that by doing so we have produced performances that could have won all six games so far, which I am very pleased with given how early this is in this new chapter and what has been a challenging start.”
