Wednesday sit four points behind fourth-bottom Derby, but crucially have the out-of-form Rams still to play on the last day of the season. Rotherham United, wedged between the two sides, are a considerable further obstacle given their two games in hand.
Speaking after their win over Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday evening, stand-in boss Jamie Smith made the admission that nine points is all that will give them the chance of a great escape.

“Ultimately we want to win it for ourselves as well, this is our livelihoods, we don’t want to play in League One next year,” he said.
“The manager has come in and been brilliant and especially with the situation he’s in at the minute, we want to do everything we can to make him feel better. That’s only going to be us winning games and trying to keep the club in the league.”
Asked to provide a message to Wednesday fans, he said:
“It’s hard when you’re losing matches and we’re in the situation we’re in to get the belief you can do it. All I’ll say is to stick with us. We’ll try our hardest in these next three games and we’ll do everything we can.”

“To be fair, I asked a geezer in the stand when we had a throw-in with about five minutes left and he told me the result, so we were just trying to hold on for the last few minutes”
“I’ve no idea [whether it would be enough]. It’s a cliche but we’ve got to take each game as it comes. We have to win all three games, I think, and we’ll do our best.
“If the other teams win and what we do isn’t quite good enough then so be it, but while it’s still possible we fully believe. We’re going to go out there to win every game.”
