Sheffield Wednesday’s schedule squash as the games pile up

The Owls, who find themselves on an impressive five-game winning streak at Hillsborough, were due to line up against Steve Cooper’s Swans on Saturday afternoon, but it was confirmed on Friday that the match would not be going ahead.

They said in an official statement on their website, “The Owls’ Championship home game against Swansea has been postponed due to a frozen pitch. A pitch inspection at Hillsborough was conducted on Friday and the surface deemed unplayable.

“The fixture will be rearranged with details announced in due course.”

But the matter of when it will be rearranged to is certainly going to be an interesting one for the Owls and their Welsh counterparts, with the fixture schedule already packed between now and the end of the season.

Wednesday do have a gap midweek after their trip to Reading on March 6th next month, but that week won’t be suitable for their opponents given the fact that they’re due to play away at Blackburn Rovers on March 9th.

After that, the Owls play on the weekend and midweek every week until the start of April, with the week of Easter Monday (April 5th) the first available date for both teams. After that there’s May 4th/5th, but that would mean playing two games on the final week of the 2020/21 campaign.

It’s likely that both teams will be eager to get the game played at the earliest possible time, which would suggest that the April date is their best bet – although if any other games are postponed (due to inclement weather or COVID-related issues) then SWFC are rapidly running out of spots.

For Neil Thompson, he now turns his focus to facing Stoke City on Tuesday night as they look to try and get back to winning ways on the road following the loss at Millwall on their last game away from Hillsborough.

Their next home game is against Birmingham City on February 20th, and they’ll certainly be hoping that the pitch is sorted and ready to be played on by then.
