The 20-year-old, who played in defence and midfielder for Wednesday during his breakthrough campaign at Hillsborough, was unveiled as a Bhoy on Tuesday, and spoke of his aspirations to make an immediate impact on Ange Postecoglou during preseason.

It’s understood that Wednesday agreed to cut short Shaw’s deal at Hillsborough so that he would be able to join his new club for preseason when it begins this month in return for prompt payment from the Scottish club, with his previous deal meaning that he’d only have been allowed to join up with them from July 1st.

The Star understands that, now the move has been completed, Wednesday will receive around £300,000 – a set figure decided upon by FIFA – in compensation for their role in his development when coming through their academy, with payment (if not done already) expected to come through in the next month or so.

It may not be long before Shaw comes up against his former Owls teammates as his new club and former club lock horns in a preseason friendly on July 7th, and that agreement may well have helped in negotiations when it came to the early termination of his previous Wednesday deal.

It’s been reported in the Scottish press that Celtic are to begin preseason training next week ahead of their first preseason game against Wednesday, and Shaw will no doubt be pleased that an agreement was struck that will allow him to be there from the first day.

For Wednesday, while £300,000 is still a disappointing amount given the promise shown by Shaw, it’s not an amount to be sniffed at in the midst of a global pandemic as the club deal with plenty of financial issues at present.

Wednesday are set to return for their preseason on June 28th, a few days after the League One fixtures are announced on June 24th.
