Only second-bottom Derby County have scored fewer than Wednesday six goals in 10 games, with Barry Bannan the only player to have scored more than a single league goal, both of which arrived via the penalty spot. They haven’t scored more than one goal in a game since the opening day of the season.

Tuesday evening’s impressive 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Bournemouth arrested a run of four straight defeats and Monk believes it can act as the starting point for a much improved goal threat going forward.

Coupled with news that the club’s 12-point deduction for misconduct has been halved, there is a growing confidence at Wednesday heading into today’s home clash with Millwall.

“The performance on Tuesday will give us a boost in confidence,” he said. “Not so much the six points, but the win is what you work all week for, it’s the ultimate confidence boost.

“In those three games where we were extremely poor, of course its natural that the confidence is lower in terms of the shots that you do have or the chances that you have get harder to take and then you don’t get that feeling from it.

“As much as you push for it and demand for it on the training ground, it takes something in a game, a win or a good performance, to ultimately get out of it.”

The Owls are up against a Millwall side that has won four of their six away games this season, but Monk appeared confident of getting a result with an improving side.

“We weren’t prolific against Bournemouth,” he said. “We had opportunities that we missed, but our confidence levels will return. I truly believe that.

“The demand is there, the clinical edge needs to come, but if we keep that consistent level of performance it will grow from there.

“You see it all the time in football, the difference when a team is confident and when a team is having a tough time. You try to change that as quick as you can.

“You’ll see the clinical nature will come. That confidence level took a good rise against Bournemouth and hopefully we’ll see that come out on Saturday.”
