Henrik Pedersen outlines transfer window wish as Sheffield Wednesday face fresh dilemma
Sheffield Wednesday have been given the green light to bring new faces in - but there is another hurdle they now need to jump.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen has confirmed the club has been granted permission to sign two players on loan - but has warned their options are limited.
As reported by The Star on Saturday, the Owls have been given permission to strengthen their squad in this month’s transfer window following talks with the English Football League (EFL).
Following last summer’s exodus and a never-ending injury crisis, the Owls are rapidly running out of senior players, so much so only four players aged 22 or over were included in the matchday squad for Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at QPR.
Since the end of last season, Wednesday have only been able to bring in five new faces, signing Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass on loan in the summer window, Joe Lumley on an emergency seven-day loan deal in October and free agents Liam Cooper and Nathan Redmond in November.
Cooper and Redmond were drafted in following extensive talks with the EFL amid Wednesday’s desperate need to strengthen their squad. Wednesday are still operating under recruitment restrictions, so much so they are set to have to turn to players where their respective parent club will cover their salaries.
Pedersen outlines transfer hopes
Issuing an update on Wednesday’s current situation, Pedersen, speaking to The Star after his side’s defeat at Loftus Road, said: "Yes, we can sign two loan players without giving them [a] salary, or a very, very small [salary].
"Of course, an experienced player would be amazing, but when you can't pay [a] salary... I think many clubs have seen what's happened with Harry, and this is what we can give to them.
"We can give them a good platform for a young player to get a lot of game minutes and to get good training and to be in a good environment where they can grow as a human and as a football player.
"We had a list with players who could be potential players and interesting players, but, of course, this list is smaller when you can't pay salary.
"We will use the next days to see what we can do and speak with the different clubs, where there could be potential loan players."
