Exclusive:Sheffield Wednesday takeover to complete - details as Owls sit hours from new era
It’s going to be a busy day at Sheffield Wednesday.
The takeover of Sheffield Wednesday by US consortium Arise Capital Partners will complete today, inside sources have told The Star. After a long and winding process which began when outgoing owner Dejphon Chansiri was forced to place the club in administration in late October, The Star understands that only the finer points of legal paperwork stand between the crisis-stricken club and its fresh start.
With one source describing the various aspects of the deal as ‘basically done’, lawyers are understood to have worked throughout the night in order to ensure completion is achieved today, May 1. As things stand the takeover is not fully signed and sealed but there appears to be no concern that things will not be completed today - with an official announcement understood to be prepared for release in the coming hours.
The May 1 date became a deadline for Arise, who were said to be wary of the process falling into the jurisdiction of the Independent Football Regulator next week - and the delays that would inevitably follow. A major rebuild of the club is required both on and off the pitch. Huge plans are in place for a celebration of the takeover - and the end of a long and arduous season - at the final day of the season outing against West Brom at a sold-out Hillsborough tomorrow.
The Star understands that bid leader David Storch will be at the stadium today - potentially even before the deal is announced - having travelled from London yesterday. Prospective co-owner Tom Costin arrives in the UK today. Families of the three proposed directors, Michael Storch being the third, will attend the match tomorrow.
Final talks with football authorities and other stakeholders took place this week with the deadline looming. As of first thing this morning insiders suggest that while there remains a ‘hundreds of pages’ of paperwork to sign-off, the current belief is that the takeover will complete sometime ‘early afternoon’ rather than this evening. An official club announcement will follow.
Full ratification of the takeover will effectively signal the end of a Chansiri era that brought the club to its knees. Arise will take on the responsibility of a vast rebuild of Sheffield Wednesday FC.
