Frank admission made on Sheffield Wednesday goal struggle after disappointing Stockport County draw

Sheffield Wednesday drew 0-0 with Stockport County on Saturday.

The speed and braveness shown on the ball cost Sheffield Wednesday a performance in a goalless home draw with Stockport County on Saturday, according to Owls boss Henrik Pedersen.

Wednesday have an unusual record at home this season, scoring seven times in a rampant win over Bromley - while failing to score in any of their three other league matches. A lacklustre display against the Hatters saw them out-shot by six to 18 on the day and though the home side were improved in the second half, they never truly got going in attack.

The point means Wednesday drop to second in the early days of their rebuild effort. Asked on the speed at which his side moved the ball in a performance that was at points ponderous, the Dane admitted his disappointment on how things went: “It was slow,” he said.

“We we want to be aggressive. We want to press high, and the the balance to to go high. And we had the two sixes, and when the brought the bar up, then you have to bring bring more people, more players in the pressing, and that's why we changed it to second half, where we said ‘It's all in guys’. We cannot be passive here. We want to be dominant. We play at home, and I think the players did it really well in second half.”

Though things are still developing just seven matches into the campaign and without key figures such as the injured Louie Barry, Wednesday’s odd scoring record at home leaves question marks over their ability to open sides up.

Asked what the issues were in Wednesday not being able to push on in attack, Pedersen said: “I think the the speed on the ball. We we need the combination of patience, but also speed on the ball, and then the number of situation where we speed up the game. We need to have an open body position, opposite movement speed-up, situations where we cut out a pass, where where we again have opposite runs, situation where we speed up the game.

“This is what we need to have more because you need to speed up a game before you can create more, and then I think the courage, the braveness, just to play, to play with risk, play forward, to come with more people in the box, and this braveness we have to find again because we have good players, but we have to open up and play with a full heart again.”
