There were a total of 10 Owls academy graduates in Monk’s matchday squad last night, with youngsters such as Ciaran Brennan, Conor Grant, Liam Waldock, Charles Hagan getting among things by either starting or making the bench.

Grant, Waldock and Hagan all went on to feature for Wednesday in the U23s opening game earlier today, with the former and latter both scoring as Lee Bullen’s side were defeated 3-2 by Wigan Athletic.

Monk hinted that some of youngsters would be sent out on loan in normal circumstances, but admitted it might be a case of ‘needs must’ for the club as they continue to try and bolster the first team.

“It all depends on where the squad ends up by the end of this window…,” Monk said.

“My want is to strengthen, but that’s an ongoing situation and we’ll see what happens with that.

“Regardless of what the squad looks like though, a lot of the young lads will be in the first team this season, but I’m talking about the ones who are coming up behind that.

“Ideally there would be loans, but we’ll keep looking at it, we’ll get them on the pitch and keep developing them.”

Monk did explain that the likes of Alex Hunt and Liam Shaw, who both starred in the 2-0 win over Rochdale, are further down the development line, whereas others may not yet be ready for Championship football.
