Sheffield Wednesday man takes big step towards major tournament bow with latest news

Sheffield Wednesday’s Sean Fusire is one step closer to booking his place on the plane to the 2025 African Cup of Nations.

It’s been a decade since the Owls last had a representative at Africa’s showpiece footballing event, with Kamil Zayatte back in 2015 being the last Wednesday player to feature there. The defender didn’t feature in any of Guinea’s games that year, though, and no player from S6 has ever actually taken part in a game there.

So it would be a big moment, for both Fusire and Wednesday, should he make the final cut in Marian ‘Mario’ Marinica’s squad for the final tournament when it gets underway next month, and being named on the 55-man longlist sees him halfway there.

Sean Fusire is in Zimbabwe’s provisional squad

Fusire has played four times for his nation since making his international debut earlier this year under Michael Nees, and started both games in the most recent round of fixtures as they lost to Algeria and beat Qatar. That will be taken as a big positive ahead of the final squad being named before December 11th, and Fusire will certainly have his fingers crossed that he makes it.

Marinica has named players playing in various different countries around the world, including players from other English clubs such as Wolverhampton Wanderers, Reading, Plymouth Argyle and Luton Town. Only around 28 will make the cut, though, when push comes to shove.

The Warriors get their tournament underway on December 22nd against Egypt in Agadir before taking on Angola in Marrakesh four days later. Their last group game, against South Africa, will take place in the same stadium on December 29th, and they’ll be desperate to try and secure a top-two finish.
