Popular Sheffield Wednesday promotion-winner signs for non-league club

“I will always have Wednesday in my heart”

A popular Sheffield Wednesday promotion-winner has signed for a non-league club.

Dennis Adeniran made 51 appearances, scoring seven goals, across two seasons between 2021 and 2023. The former England youth international joined The Owls on a free transfer from Everton when Darren Moore was manager.

The central midfielder won promotion from League One with Wednesday in 2023. He played almost half an hour in the play-off semi-final first leg defeat to Peterborough United but did not feature in the miraculous comeback at Hillsborough in the second leg or in the win against Barnsley at Wembley. His two goals that campaign came in a 3-0 victory away at Accrington Stanley in April.

The bubbly personality admitted that being released at the end of that season was a ‘shock’ but only had positive things to say about his time at the club. He told The Star at the time: “I really do only wish the best for Sheffield Wednesday and I will always be supporting from wherever I am. I loved my time at Wednesday. I will always have Wednesday in my heart.”

Since leaving, Adeniran, who started out at Fulham and has set-up his own coaching company, went on to play for Portuguese side Portimonense, Israeli outfit Hapoel Petah Tikva, St Mirren and Barnet. The 27-year-old has now signed for National League South club Slough Town, who are second from bottom of the division with just one win from 10.

Adeniran, who was a popular figure for Wednesday for his energetic displays and infectious smile, but struggled with injuries, made his debut for his new club off the bench on Tuesday night in a 1-1 draw against Ebbsfleet United, with Slough Town scoring a late equaliser to secure a point.

Announcing his arrival, Slough Town said: “With experience across the EFL, Scottish Premiership and overseas, Adeniran adds further senior experience to our midfield.”

Interim joint manager, Ryan Case, added: “He’s a great acquisition for us. He gives us an older head, a senior head in a very important part of the pitch that we’ve maybe lacked this season.”
