Harry Amass’ first goal for Wednesday was a stunner and pulled on many of his finest attributes, but it proved to be the brightest moment of the long away trip for the beleaguered Owls, who head into a much-needed and well-earned international break on the back of defeat.
The Saints had scored twice ahead of Amass’ goal through Carsten Jander and Finn Azaz, with Adam Armstrong adding a finish of real quality to take any wind out of Wednesday sails at the start of the second half.
From there, things became something of a procession as Southampton sat in and Wednesday dragged themselves through efforts to get things going.
Here are our ratings after defeat on the south coast.

1. Ethan Horvath - 3
Might well have fancied another go at the first couple of goals. Spilled one a little later that almost allowed Southampton to make it three - which is did with one he'd have also liked another look at. He's had excellent days and not excellent days with Wednesday - this was one of the latter. | UGC

2. Sean Fusire - 6
Early mix-up with his keeper was nearly a comedy own goal, but all's well that doesn't. Fine anticipation to clear one off the goal line midway through the first half. Battled hard, provided some danger drifting in to central positions. | UGC

3. Liam Palmer - 6
A little hesitant in moments but recovered nicely enough. Vital headed intervention before the hour prevent further woes. Off for Ugbo with 20 or so to run. | UGC

4. Dominic Iorfa - 5
Started with all the confidence you'd expect from a player in his form coming into it. Ultimately mis-stepped for the third goal as he was spun aground and from there it was game over. Ended up offering a turn up top. | UGC
