Wigan ace reveals 'first thing' behind Sheffield Wednesday draw after securing 'decent result'
Sheffield Wednesday were forced to settle for a point against a well-drilled Wigan Athletic side at Hillsborough on Saturday, drawing 0-0.
Wigan Athletic midfielder Charlie Gray has admitted that their first ambition after arriving at Hillsborough for Saturday’s League One clash with Sheffield Wednesday was to keep a clean sheet.
The Latics went into the clash with the Owls looking to respond to last weekend’s 4-0 drubbing at home to Stockport County, which marked a fourth defeat in their opening five league games of the season.
To the Latics’ credit, they produced a solid away performance that was worthy of the point they earned, setting themselves up to frustrate Wednesday and make life as uncomfortable as possible for the League One leaders.
Wednesday had the better of the first half, coming closest to opening the scoring when Mason Burstow smashed an effort against the woodwork. Wigan, though, enjoyed the better of the chances after the break, with Jensen Weir also striking the woodwork.
Having gone into the contest bottom of the table, the odds were firmly stacked against the Latics. However, they showed plenty of heart and courage to leave Hillsborough with a point in the bag.
Despite admitting they had chances to come away with all three points, Manchester City loanee Gray was happy to take something from the contest, describing the outcome as a “decent result”.
"It was a great team performance, and a great result - and we had the chances to have come away with even more," said Gray, as quoted by Wigan Today. "But to come here, to the top of the league, and getting a point is still a decent result.
"The first thing for us was securing the clean sheet, and I think we did great to achieve that. If we could have put one of our chances away, it would have been even better, but we're pleased with one.
"I think any team in this division will feel a point at Hillsborough is a great point, with how they've started the season. They'd won four of their first five games and are top of the league, so we knew it would be a very tough game, but we more than matched them.
"The important thing is not to let the results so far get us down, because I think we all know what we can do in this group.”
