Sheffield Wednesday's League One rivals 'interested' in free agent as Leyton Orient 'target' winger

All the very latest League One transfer rumours as the window prepares to enter its fourth week.

Sheffield Wednesday have been among League One’s busiest clubs so far this summer’s transfer window.

The Owls secured the signing of Aston Villa defender Sil Swinkels last Thursday, taking their number of incomings so far this summer to four. Wednesday are in the process of rebuilding their squad following relegation from the Championship last term, and several more additions are expected as the summer unfolds.

It is understood Wednesday are edging closer to wrapping up the signings of former captain Barry Bannan and Leeds United youngster Harry Gray. Former loanee Tayo Adaramola is also understood to remain an active target.

With the start of the new season a little over a month away, clubs up and down the third tier are working hard to try and bolster their respective squads. With that said, here are some of the latest transfer rumours concerning Wednesday’s League One rivals...

Duo ‘interested’ in Ngwenya

Huddersfield Town and Wigan Athletic are ‘interested’ in signing former Dunfermline Athletic defender Kieran Ngwenya, according to a report by Football Insider. The 23-year-old is currently a free agent after turning down the offer of a new contract at Dunfermline earlier this summer.

The Scottish outfit confirmed his departure on June 18, announcing he had turned down the offer of a new deal. He had been with the club since June 2024, racking up 61 appearances for the East End Park outfit.

It is claimed both Huddersfield and Wigan have ‘registered interest’ in the 23-year-old and are ‘keen’ on securing his signature. He made 27 appearances across all competitions for Dunfermline last season.

Ngwenya, despite playing most of his football at centre-back last term, can also play at left-back, meaning he possesses a versatile profile. Born in Glasgow, he has never played club football outside of Scotland.

St Mirren have also been credited with interest in his signature.

Orient ‘target’ Dale

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Leyton Orient are ‘in talks’ with former Oxford United winger Owen Dale over a move to Brisbane Road. Dale is available on a free transfer this summer after being released by Oxford following the end of last season.

The winger, 27, spent last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, scoring one goal in 32 appearances across all competitions. It is reported that Plymouth wanted to sign Dale on a permanent basis, but his ‘demands could not be met’ by the Devon outfit.

The former Crewe Alexandra man’s demands, according to Nixon, could also be ‘too much’ for Orient, who host Wednesday on the opening day of the League One campaign next month. The Londoners are keen to bolster their attacking options this summer and Dale is capable of playing on either flank.
