Sheffield Wednesday's League One rivals 'set' to sign winger as Barnsley 'close in' on striker

All the very latest League One transfer rumours ahead of the start of the 2026/27 season.

Time is running out for Sheffield Wednesday to add to their squad ahead of their upcoming pre-season tour of Hungary and Austria.

The Owls are scheduled to fly out to Budapest on Sunday and will spend five days in the Hungarian capital before crossing the border into Austria to complete their mini European tour. The overseas trip is scheduled to feature a clash with Stoke City on July 25.

Wednesday have made eight signings so far this summer, the most recent of which was goalkeeper Joe Lumley. The shot-stopper returned to Hillsborough on a free transfer from Bristol City last Saturday, signing a two-year contract.

With such a huge rebuild required at Hillsborough this summer, it is not unrealistic to suggest that at least another ten players could come in before the window closes on September 1.

With just a month to go until the 2026/27 League One campaign gets underway, here are some of the latest transfer rumours concerning Wednesday’s third-tier counterparts...

Winger ‘set’ for Huddersfield switch

According to a report by Voetbal International, Huddersfield Town are ‘closing in’ on the signing of Excelsior winger Derensili Sanches Fernandes. It is reported that the 25-year-old is ‘set’ to join the West Yorkshire outfit, subject to the paperwork being finalised.

The right-winger enjoyed a solid campaign for Excelsior last season, scoring six goals and registering three assists in 36 Eredivisie appearances. It was his highest-scoring season in the Dutch top flight in his career to date.

After starting his career at Excelsior, Sanches Fernandes returned to the Stadion Woudestein in 2023 from FC Utrecht. He has made 104 appearances for Excelsior, scoring 20 goals.

Although the winger is reportedly closing in on a move to West Yorkshire, the transfer fee involved has not been reported.

Barnsley ‘closing in’ on striker

Barnsley are ‘poised’ to complete the signing of Portsmouth striker Makenzie Kirk, according to a report by The News. The Northern Ireland Under-21 international has fallen down the pecking order at Fratton Park and is expected to join the Tykes on a season-long loan.

Kirk joined Portsmouth from Scottish club St Johnstone last September, signing a three-year deal, but has made just 14 appearances for the club, scoring one goal. He last featured when Pompey were beaten 1-0 by Derby County in March.

Kirk, 22, was left out of Portsmouth’s squad for their 2-1 win over Woking in their opening pre-season friendly of the summer on Tuesday night, and it has been reported that he was in South Yorkshire ‘tying up a deal’ ahead of a proposed move to Oakwell.

Signed for a reported fee of £500,000 last year, Kirk will be hoping to take advantage of regular minutes at Barnsley after finding opportunities hard to come by down south.
