Sheffield Wednesday's South Yorkshire rivals take former Owls defender Tom Lees on trial
Former Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Tom Lees is training with Rotherham United.
Former Sheffield Wednesday defender Tom Lees is on trial at nearby Rotherham United, Millers boss Alex Bruce has confirmed.
The experienced centre-back, who spent seven years at Hillsborough, is currently without a club after leaving Peterborough United at the end of last season.
Rotherham are preparing for their first League Two campaign in more than a decade after suffering relegation from England’s third tier last season, marking their second relegation in the space of just three seasons.
A major squad rebuild is required at the New York Stadium, and a player of Lees’ experience could be a sensible and shrewd signing for the Millers.
Lees, who will turn 36 later this year, featured 35 times for Peterborough last season after joining the club last August and is now training with the Millers.
"He's one that we're looking at,” Bruce told the Rotherham Advertiser. "Obviously, he's an experienced player.
“I've known Tom for a long time. He's been in a couple of times to do a couple of sessions. We've got to monitor him.
"His pedigree speaks for itself. We need to make sure it's right for Tom and make sure he's right for us. We're going to see how that pans out over the next few days."
Lees, who joined the Owls on a free transfer in July 2014, was a popular figure throughout his time at Hillsborough, racking up 274 appearances in Wednesday colours and scoring ten goals.
Following his exit from S6 in the summer of 2021, Lees moved to Huddersfield Town and spent four seasons in West Yorkshire, making 155 appearances and chipping in with eight goals. He helped them reach the Championship play-off final in his first season at the club, but they were pipped to promotion by Nottingham Forest after losing 1-0 at Wembley.
