Sheffield Wednesday complete Billy Mitchell transfer as contract length revealed
Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed their ninth signing of the summer transfer window by swooping for Billy Mitchell.
Sheffield Wednesday have further bolstered their midfield by completing the signing of former Millwall midfielder Billy Mitchell.
The Star revealed on Thursday night that the Owls were closing in on the 25-year-old, and confirmed Mitchell’s arrival on a free transfer on Sunday morning.
Mitchell, who made almost 200 appearances for the Lions, has signed a three-year deal at Hillsborough and will join his teammates on the Owls’ pre-season camp, with the squad departing for Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday.
Reports from London suggested that Mitchell had turned down numerous offers of a new contract to stay at Millwall and Wednesday moved in last week to begin talks with a player who played a key role in Alex Neill’s side’s push for promotion last season, which ended in a play-off semi-final defeat to Hull City.
There had been reported interest from Scotland and also from the Championship, with Watford keen to sign the Londoner.
Following confirmation of his move to Hillsborough, Mitchell told the Owls’ website: “I’m very excited, this is a massive club, massive opportunity. We all know Sheffield Wednesday doesn't belong in League One and I, along with the rest of the boys, am going to make it our sole mission to get promoted.
“It’s the history of the club, the size of the club, the fans, and I've heard great things about the dressing room. I think the thing that sticks out to me the most is how everyone's stuck together, how the fans have stuck by the team through thick and thin. That's something that you can't buy.
“Having spoken to the owner and hearing how he envisaged the club moving forward and doing it with a smile on our faces as well, that was something that really enticed me.”
Mitchell becomes Wednesday’s third midfield signing of the summer, following on from the recent arrivals of Callum Slattery, who arrived on a free transfer after leaving Motherwell, and Barry Bannan from Millwall.
