European club 'in talks' to appoint former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl as new boss

Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl is a top target for the Red Bull Salzburg job.

Red Bull Salzburg are ‘in talks’ with Rangers to try and ‘finalise’ a deal for former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl, according to Sky Sports.

It emerged earlier this week that the Austrian club had identified Röhl, who left Hillsborough under a cloud last July, as their preferred candidate to replace Daniel Beichler, who was sacked last month after just 14 games in charge.

Röhl was only installed as Rangers boss as recently as last October, being drafted in to try and rekindle their title hopes after a disastrous start to the season under former boss Russell Martin. Despite climbing their way to the top of the Scottish Premiership, an end-of-season wobble saw Rangers finish third, ten points behind champions Celtic.

As a result, a number of Rangers supporters called for Röhl to be dismissed following the end of the season. However, Gers chairman Andrew Cavenagh publicly backed the German, confirming he would remain in charge ahead of next season.

Amid Salzburg’s eagerness to install Röhl as their new boss, it is reported the former Wednesday chief will only leave Ibrox if the Austrian outfit ‘meet Rangers’ terms’. Röhl signed a two-and-a-half-year contract in Glasgow, meaning he remains under contract until the summer of 2028.

With the possibility of a departure looking all the more likely, Rangers, according to reports, could turn to Hearts boss Derek McInnes to replace Röhl, who led Wednesday to Championship survival in 2023/24 and a respectable 12th-placed finish in 2024/25.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who previously managed Rangers between 2018 and 2021, is also being linked with a return north of the border should Röhl depart.
