Jarvis Thornton signs new Sheffield Wednesday contract as Simon Wilson outlines target for academy graduate
Academy graduate Jarvis Thornton has signed a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday.
Midfielder Jarvis Thornton has committed his future to Sheffield Wednesday by signing a new contract at Hillsborough.
The Owls academy graduate has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal, extending his stay in S6 until the summer of 2028. It was confirmed by the Owls in May that he had been offered a new deal.
After climbing the rungs of Wednesday’s academy system, Thornton, 20, made his senior debut for the club against Bolton Wanderers in the first round of the Carabao Cup last August, helping a youthful Owls side advance to the next round of the competition after winning on penalties.
That marked his first of 27 appearances for Wednesday last season, as he took advantage of manager Henrik Pedersen's limited number of senior options to establish himself in the first-team squad. He went on to make 23 Championship appearances, becoming a regular fixture after Christmas.
After making the decision to extend his stay with the Owls, Thornton told the club’s website: “I’m really pleased. I’ve been here such a long time, coming through all the ranks, and then last year was a lot better for me personally, playing a lot of games in the first team.
“Playing at Championship level made me ten times a better player on and off the pitch as well, a better professional, and I grew up quicker than I expected. Hopefully, I can kick on this year and do some good things for the club.”
Sporting director Simon Wilson added: “This new contract reflects our belief in Jarvis and gives him the platform to continue his development. He has demonstrated that he is capable of contributing to our first team, but now the challenge is to earn those opportunities more consistently.
“We’re looking forward to seeing how he continues to progress within our environment.”
