Sheffield Wednesday will lock horns with Notts County in a league fixture for the first time in over 14 years when they make the trip to Meadow Lane on Tuesday evening.
The duo arrived in League One this season via different directions after the Owls were relegated from the Championship and Notts were promoted from League Two after beating Salford City 3-0 in the play-off final at Wembley.
Since they last faced each other in the league, Wednesday have come within touching distance of the Premier League, experienced two promotions and two relegations, and endured a spell in administration. Meanwhile, Notts have suffered two relegations, spent four seasons in the National League and secured two promotions.
The sides last met in the league at Meadow Lane in March 2012, when Wednesday won 2-1, extending Dave Jones’ winning start as Owls manager after he had replaced Gary Megson just over a fortnight earlier. The Owls secured all three points via second half goals from Ryan Lowe and Gary Madine.
More than 14 years on from their last league meeting, here is a look back at how the Owls lined up that day...

9. LM: Mike Jones
Signed from Bury in January 2012 to assist with Wednesday’s promotion push, winger Jones made just 11 appearances for the Owls, with the win at Meadow Lane marking his penultimate start for the club. Despite signing a two-and-a-half-year deal at Hillsborough, he departed just over six months after his arrival, joining Crawley Town. 10. ST: Gary Madine
Wednesday’s chief goalscorer as they earned promotion in 2011/12, Madine was on the scoresheet the last time the Owls visited Meadow Lane, rifling in their second goal of the game after bringing down a Buxton throw-in and shrugging off two defenders. He scored 18 goals in what was his first full season at Hillsborough. Although he stayed with Wednesday until the summer of 2015, he was never able to replicate that tally, heading out on loan three times. 11. ST: Ryan Lowe
After establishing himself as a reliable goalscorer at Bury, Lowe moved to Hillsborough in August 2011 in what was widely considered a statement signing. However, he never hit the heights Wednesday had hoped for, scoring just nine goals in 30 appearances. On target during Wednesday’s last trip to Meadow Lane, Lowe converted an Antonio cross, showcasing his predatory instincts. He left Hillsborough in August 2012 to join MK Dons. After retiring in 2018, he moved into management and has had spells in charge of Bury, Plymouth Argyle, Preston North End and Wigan Athletic. | Getty Images
