Sheffield Wednesday star walking disciplinary tightrope with cut-off point weeks away
Callum Slattery was booked for a fourth time this season in Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.
Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Callum Slattery is now one yellow card away from triggering an automatic one-match suspension after being cautioned in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Huddersfield Town.
The 27-year-old, who joined the Owls during the summer after leaving Scottish club Motherwell, was booked in the 22nd minute of the clash at the Accu Stadium after committing a cynical foul on Cameron Humphreys.
It was Slattery’s fourth caution in his last six League One appearances, meaning he is now just one yellow card away from a one-match suspension. He is one of nine League One players currently within one booking of a ban.
EFL rules state that any player who accumulates five yellow cards in their club’s first 19 league matches of the season must serve a one-match suspension. Wednesday’s 19th League One fixture of the season, as things stand, is against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Thursday, December 10. This means Slattery must navigate the next two months without receiving another yellow card to avoid triggering a suspension.
The former Southampton youngster has been booked in four of the Owls’ last six League One outings, receiving cautions against Bromley, Wycombe Wanderers, Peterborough United and Huddersfield.
Slattery has established himself as a key player in manager Henrik Pedersen’s plans at Hillsborough this season, starting each of the Owls’ first eight league matches and featuring in 11 of their 12 outings across all competitions.
Wednesday, who have received 17 yellow cards in League One so far this season, do not currently have any other players teetering on the brink of suspension. Liam Cooper has received the Owls’ second-highest number of yellow cards this term, having been cautioned twice.
Players who receive ten yellow cards before the end of their club’s 37th league match of the campaign will be forced to serve a two-match suspension.
