'The right way' - David Hirst reveals what has impressed him about Arise after Sheffield Wednesday takeover

David Hirst has been really impressed by David Storch since be completed his purchase of Sheffield Wednesday earlier this year.

Former Sheffield Wednesday striker David Hirst has saluted Owls chairman David Storch and his staff for the way in which they have embraced the city of Sheffield, admitting it is a stark contrast to former owner Dejphon Chansiri’s approach.

Storch’s Arise Capital Partners consortium completed its takeover of the Owls at the beginning of May, and they have overseen an impressive turnaround in a very short space of time, making countless improvements both on and off the pitch.

As well as rebuilding manager Henrik Pedersen’s squad over the summer, Arise have also invested around £9million in infrastructure improvements at both Hillsborough and the club’s Middlewood Road training ground.

Among the many improvements made over the summer was the introduction of premium matchday offerings for supporters at Hillsborough, including the launch of ‘Hirsty’s Social’ – a bar located inside the South Stand. It has been a big hit with supporters, who have enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere inside the lounge and the opportunity to chat with Hirst and former Owls stars of yesteryear.

Hirst first met Storch in March, soon after Arise had been installed as the preferred bidder to complete the takeover of the club. The pair have quickly developed a strong friendship, with Hirst now a matchday staple at Hillsborough after so many years of staying away due to his bad relationship with Chansiri.

The former Owls striker was a big critic of the Thai businessman’s ten-and-a-half-year reign, meaning he is delighted with the way Storch has set about trying to run Wednesday completely differently.

Hirst told the Mail: “I've seen Storchy and other members of his staff in and around the city. They've been at Sunday League football, non-league football, in the city shaking hands and speaking to people. That never happened before.

“With Mr Chansiri, it was his box and that was that. There was no input or output. He ran things the way he saw fit and the guy spent a hell of a lot of money, but you can't buy dreams like that.

“He thought you could come from nowhere and run a football club his way. It turned out spending a vast amount of money wasn't the right way. The right way is to get the knowledge around you and listen to the right people.”

Having rebuilt the squad over the summer and crammed ten to 15 years worth of work at Hillsborough into around three months, Storch and his Arise colleagues could not have made a better start to their tenure.

Although Hirst has been delighted by the progress made in such a short space of time, he is mindful that patience will be key in Wednesday’s quest to move forward.

“Let's not kid ourselves,” Hirst continued. “We were weeks if not days from going under.

“We've an old ground that needs some care. They're working on it. Things are not going to be perfect this season on or off the field. Hopefully, it's good but I come from the real world, and I've been around football for long enough to know there's no magic wand in this game.”
