When EFL will confirm TV picks as Sheffield Wednesday wait to learn 2026/27 League One fixtures
Sheffield Wednesday will discover their fixture list for the 2026/27 League One campaign later this month.
With June now officially upon us, the start of the 2026 World Cup is almost here and so is fixture release day for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign.
And for Sheffield Wednesday and their supporters, following a distressing 12 months littered with chaos and carnage, everyone associated with the club is now looking forward to a fresh start under Arise Capital Partners after they completed their takeover of the Owls exactly a month ago.
Although no shortage of work is required at Hillsborough over the coming weeks ahead of the new League One campaign getting underway over the third weekend in August, the start of the new season will be here before we know it.
Wednesday will discover their fixture list for the 2026/27 League One campaign at midday on June 25, which is a little over three weeks away. Although no Wednesdayite dreams of watching their side in the third tier of English football, there is still something about the fixtures coming out that gets the juices flowing. It is from that moment onwards the countdown to the start of the new season really gets underway.
And with the World Cup getting underway in a little over a week’s time, this summer is guaranteed to go a lot quicker than a summer without an international tournament, meaning pre-season and the start of next term will be here before we know it.
Following the release of the fixtures on June 25, Wednesdayites will then have to wait and see how many, if any at all, changes will be made to their original schedule because of broadcast selections.
In recent seasons, two League One games have kicked off at 12.30pm on a Saturday lunchtime, being broadcast on Sky Sports+, while the occasional Thursday and Friday night fixtures have made their way onto the calendar. With that in mind, there is still no guarantee the Owls will kick off at 3pm on a Saturday every weekend despite being relegated to the third tier.
Fortunately, Wednesdayites will be given plenty of notice about any changes to their schedule. Following the release of the 2026/27 League One fixtures, Owls supporters will be notified of the first wave of changes to Wednesday’s schedule within a week, with the English Football League confirming broadcast selections up to, and including, the end of September will be revealed by July 2.

Following promotion out of League One in 2022/23, Wednesday saw their opening game of the 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 Championship seasons moved for live broadcast on Sky Sports. They have only started one of the last five seasons with a 3pm kick-off on a Saturday afternoon, drawing 3-3 with Portsmouth at Hillsborough on the opening day of the 2022/23 campaign.
In addition to broadcast selections for matches being played before the end of September being revealed prior to the start of the season, Owls supporters will also be informed of any changes being made to their schedule up to, and including, the weekend of January 8-11 prior to the season getting underway.
Broadcast selections for matches up to, and including, the aforementioned weekend in January will be announced by July 31. The second weekend in January is traditionally reserved for the third round of the FA Cup. Wednesday will enter the FA Cup at the first round stage next term.
By November 6, the EFL will announce which fixtures have been selected for live broadcast up to, and including, the midweek of March 2-3. By providing up to five months notice of any fixture changes from the original schedule, the EFL has said ‘fans will be able to plan with certainty when making travel and any hotel arrangements.’
Selections for matches scheduled for the weekend of March 5-8 will be announced by February 5, followed by weekly announcements looking four-weeks ahead. TV picks for matches scheduled for the penultimate weekend of the regular season will be announced three weeks in advance.
Selections for matches scheduled for the final weekend of the regular season will be announced the week prior.
