Exclusive:Murphy Cooper's stance on Sheffield Wednesday return ahead of summer transfer window

Goalkeeper Murphy Cooper has revealed he would be open to the possibility of returning to Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

The shot-stopper, 24, is currently on loan at Hillsborough from Wednesday’s Championship counterparts QPR until the end of the season.

Cooper joined the Owls in January after they were rocked by the loss of Pierce Charles to a shoulder injury for a second time this season, becoming, at that the time, the third goalkeeper to have been parachuted in on loan this term.

The former Barnsley loanee made an immediate impression between the posts, making a collection of fine saves across a cluster of solid performances. Unfortunately for him, he then encountered an injury of his own, forcing Wednesday to bring in Seny Dieng on a rolling seven-day emergency loan deal in February.

While recovering from his muscle injury, Wednesday recovered Charles from his shoulder problem, and he has re-established himself as the club’s No.1, producing a string of eye-catching performances since making his comeback.

With Wednesday facing life in League One next season, there are already fears among supporters that the club may be powerless to keep the Northern Ireland international, who is already said to be attracting plenty of interest.

Amid that possibility, a number of Wednesdayites have already identified Cooper as his ideal replacement. And if a scenario develops where he is not in QPR’s plans for next season, the shot-stopper has confirmed he would love to return to Hillsborough.

“Yes, 100 per cent,” Cooper told The Star. “Obviously, I'm a QPR player on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

“I think my standpoint is that I absolutely love the club. I have only played seven games here and I have loved it. So I would be 100 per cent open to coming back - and that's something I could definitely want to happen.

“But I think it's difficult in my position. There might be a decision out of my hands. Obviously, I love QPR, I've been there for 15 years now, so it would be difficult to leave there.

“But if that decision was made, that I wasn't part of their future, then I'd be looking here straight away.”

Although Wednesday are still waiting to find out the specifics of the recruitment restrictions they will be working under this summer, they will remain under a fee restriction ban, limiting them to free transfers and loan signings.

Cooper, who made his return from injury by storing 60 minutes under his belt for the Under-21s against Cardiff City last Friday, is understood to have three years remaining on his QPR contract, meaning the only way Wednesday could possibly re-sign him, it seems, is via another loan deal.

And if the shot-stopper does not figure in the Londoners’ plans for next term, a season-long loan at Hillsborough, should Wednesday want him, is something he would be open to.

“I think, say, if I have a discussion with QPR and they say, ‘You're not going to play here, we're looking at another loan’, then this would be the one and only club I'm looking at,” Cooper added.

“I've got a great relationship with the fans and everyone at the club. And like I've said, I love living here, I love playing for this club.

“So, I think if that was the decision to be made that I needed another year out on loan, then I would definitely be hoping it would be here.”
