European outfit 'pushing' to appoint former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl as new boss
Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl is reportedly being lined up by Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg.
Red Bull Salzburg are ‘pushing’ to try and appoint former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl as their new head coach.
That is according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who is reporting that Salzburg are already in ‘direct contact’ with Röhl’s current club, Rangers. The German moved to Ibrox last October, replacing Russell Martin.
Despite turning Rangers’ fortunes around and dragging them into title contention, the Gers lost four of their final five games following the end-of-season split. Finishing third, they eventually finished ten points behind champions Celtic.
Amid an end-of-season collapse, pressure has mounted on the Rangers hierarchy to dismiss Röhl, who left Hillsborough almost a year ago, and look elsewhere ahead of 2026/27. However, chairman Andrew Cavenagh, last month, vowed to stick with the 37-year-old and give him the chance to lead the club into next season.
News of Salzburg’s interest in the German, though, has thrown his future at Ibrox into doubt. He is under contract in Glasgow until the summer of 2028.
Röhl, who left Wednesday under a cloud after reporting back late for pre-season training last summer, has previous experience of working within the Red Bull Group, coaching at RB Leipzig in the past.
Salzburg are on the hunt for a new head coach after dismissing Daniel Beichler last month. Leading the club to a third-placed finish in the Austrian top flight, he was in charge for just 14 matches after landing the role as recently as February this year.
After winning ten successive Austrian Bundesliga titles between 2014 and 2023, Salzburg have fallen in short in each of the last three campaigns, meaning Röhl, if appointed, will be tasked with taking them back to the top step of the podium next term.
