Barry Bannan salutes Sheffield Wednesday strength after unlikely Huddersfield comeback
Sheffield Wednesday scored two very late goals to draw 2-2 with Huddersfield Town at the Accu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Midfielder Barry Bannan praised Sheffield Wednesday’s fighting spirit and togetherness after they fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Huddersfield Town at the Accu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the closing stages following second half strikes from Joe Taylor and Derensili Sanches Fernandes, Wednesday appeared destined to suffer their first away defeat of the season.
However, an 88th-minute own goal from Terriers defender Ibane Bowat gave Wednesday an injection of belief heading into stoppage time. After piling players forward in pursuit of an equaliser, the Owls were presented with an opportunity to claim an unlikely point when Marcus Harness caught Wednesday centre-back Liam Cooper with a high foot, prompting referee Edward Duckworth to eventually point to the penalty spot.
Jamal Lowe stepped up from 12 yards and calmly slotted the ball home to score his seventh goal of the season and extend Wednesday’s unbeaten run in all competitions to eight matches.
"It's a good point in the end, considering the circumstances and how the game went,” Bannan told the Owls’ in-house media. “In the first half, we couldn't really get going.
“It was just slow, and there wasn’t really a final pass or any build-up. We couldn’t really get it. But I think we probably started the second half in the worst possible way by conceding the goal, which wasn’t a great goal to concede.

“But I think from there on in, I thought it was a top, top second half performance. I thought we dominated the game really well, built up play really well and created a lot of chances in the end.
“I thought the subs came on and helped us; I thought they were brilliant. So, given the circumstances and the position we found ourselves in, the character again to come back from that and not panic was top.”
Although they had to wait almost an hour to register their first shot of the game, Bannan felt Wednesday could have come away with all three points after finishing strongly.
The Scot continued: "In the end, we probably should have won it, really. We had enough chances in the second half. I think they had two shots and two goals in the second half. We had 15 or something like that.
“So, the second half was dominant. We were behind straight away, which didn’t help us, but it just shows you the togetherness and mentality we’ve got in this group.
“It’s tough, but we need to perform a bit better in the first half. The first half wasn’t good enough.”
