Sheffield Wednesday man would welcome new signings as transfer window edges ever closer

The Owls have brought in seven players since the close of last season, with a raft of players heading through the exit door as Garry Monk attempts to forge a new future for the club.

The Wednesday boss has repeatedly made clear that he would like to see more new faces in the changing room ahead of Friday’s deadline but has remained pragmatic given the financial situation the club and others find themselves in.

The club are linked with a handful of names, though The Star understands that nothing is imminent as things stand.

One man who believes the squad is current strong enough to cope with the rigours of a Championship season – and overcome a points deduction that saw them enter this international break on minus-seven points – is Adam Reach, who like his manager has adopted a ‘more the merrier’ approach to squad depth.

Asked how confident he was that the side had enough quality to stave off any threat of relegation, Reach said last week: “I’m fully confident really.

“If you look at our squad against other squads, either newly promoted or the teams that are expected to be near the bottom, we’ve got more than enough in there to catch those teams.

“And it’s not only that, once we do catch those teams it’s a case of surpassing them and then pushing on towards the top half and to wherever else.

“The club is going to strengthen the squad if they can. But if nothing changes now, we’ve got more than enough quality in the squad to get out of this position.”

The 27-year-old, who started last week’s draw with QPR on the left having started the season as a fill-in striker, outlined his determination to make the wide position his own.

He also commented on loan links with West Brom forward Kenneth Zohore, describing the Danish target man as someone who would enhance the Owls’ squad.

Reach appeared confident the club would add to the squad and outlined the need for competition: “It’s the more the merrier I think.

“The manager has a big squad, he’s trying to keep everyone happy but at the end of the day he need to bring in who he needs to bring in to be in the strongest position.

“As professional footballers we should look forward to competition in position because it keeps us on our toes every day in training.

“What we have is a good team spirit this year, so whatever team goes out there, the lads who aren’t in it are disappointed but they’re ready to come on and help the team.

“The predicament this season we’re in is bigger than just one player and his pride. It’s bigger than players in form or how they’re getting on personally. The whole club’s future is at stake in terms of the position we’re in, possible relegation.

“We’re trying to fix that and climb the table.”
