The Argentina-born youngster was with Portuguese heavyweights Benfica for a year before he moved to Triestina in 2017.

Hidalgo, who can operate on either flank and is believed to be a primarily left footed player, played 30 times for Triestina.

But despite being fully fit, Hidalgo failed to make an appearance for the Serie C side this season.

It remains to be seen whether Hidalgo will go straight into Monk’s first-team squad or be a member of their Under-23s side.

“I know I need to take some steps towards the first team,” said Hidalgo. “I played for the first team in Italy and I know it’s not the same here.

“I want to play first for the Under-23s but my main goal is to play for the first team.”
