The Star reported earlier this week that the club were intent on redoubling their efforts to get some forwards in the door ahead of the Carabao Cup season opener at Walsall on Saturday and so it proved as both players signed on a manic day at Hillsborough.

Kachunga, announced by the club mid-afternoon, was a surprise signing on a free transfer after his contract at Huddersfield Town ended earlier this summer.

The former Germany youth international, who has since been capped once by DR Congo, can play either out wide or as a central striker and looks set to feature mainly in the latter for Monk’s side.

Windass sings on a two-year deal with an option for a third and is a face well-known to Wednesdayites after a successful loan period saw him score three goals in nine appearances despite an injury-torn loan spell last season.

The Yorkshire-born son of former Owls loanee Dean put the final touches to his deal around lunchtime before it was announced this evening.

The move sees him reunite not only with Monk and Wednesday but with sometime mentor James Beattie, who plucked him from non-league Harrogate Railway into professional football when manager of Accrington Stanley in 2012.

The 26-year-old can play either as an attacking midfielder or as a striker. Monk made clear before the end of last season he was keen on re-signing Windass before a mini-saga that was followed every step of the way by The Star.

A fee was agreed with the receivers dealing with the finances of bankrupt Wigan nearly two weeks ago but the intricacies of the deal saw it held up.

The double-swoop provides Wednesday with a monumental boost heading into that season opener in the Midlands. Whilst it is known that both players have been training individually, it is not known whether the pair will be considered fit enough to take part in Saturday’s clash, which will be televised live on Sky in a revised 2:15pm kick-off.

Wednesday set off on their league campaign the week after with a trip to Cardiff City.
