The Owls have a number of senior players out of contract at the end of next month, while there are also decisions being made at U23 level with regards to who has the ability to potentially step up and who could secure themselves a professional contract for the first time.

Darren Moore has stated that conversations will be taking place with all of the senior players at the club in the coming days, however The Star has previously reported that discussions have already been underway within the youth setup.

The likes of Charles Hagan and Lewis Farmer have been offered extensions, while a one-year option on Declan Thompson’s contract has been exercised. Unfortunately for players such as Isaac Rice, Charlie Reaney and Corey Glaves, they are thought to have come to the end of their road at Hillsborough.

Now, with Lee Bullen’s U23s playing their final game of the season this afternoon against Swansea City, the starting XI looks to give a hint about who is going to be part of matters going forward.

Alongside Hagan, Farmer, Thompson and Galvin, former Arsenal youth defender, Josh Dawodu, was present in a suggestion that he is also being presented with an opportunity to stay – however there were notable absences for the likes of Ben Hughes, Rice and Reaney.

Liam Waldock – who has a one-year option – started in midfield once again, while Luke Jackson was on the bench as a trialist goalkeeper started between the sticks.

Meanwhile, there could be a hint to the fact that young Alex Bonnington, as well as Basile Zottos, Paulo Aguas and Jay Glover are set for professional deals after they were given starts, while Will Trueman – who is also soon to be too old for the U18s – was on the bench.

All five have had good seasons for the U18s, and it would be no surprise to see them take the step up to U23 level on a permanent basis for the 2021/22 campaign.

Wednesday’s U23s drew 1-1 with Swansea, with Waldock scoring the equaliser after being set up by Hagan.
