How bloodied Sheffield Wednesday 'warrior' is doing amid long-wait penalty verdict

Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Huddersfield Town didn’t come and go without its share of bruises.

Liam Cooper left the Accu Stadium with a bandage on his head following Sheffield Wednesday’s dramatic late draw with Huddersfield Town, with Owls boss Henrik Pedersen comparing him to a legendary England defender.

The veteran centre-half was replaced late on in the draw, which saw the Owls score in the 88th and 98th minutes to battle back from a first hour in which the home side were dominant. Cooper challenged for the ball that earned Wednesday a penalty in injury time, with officials taking around two minutes to come to a decision after consultation. Jamal Lowe rolled the spot kick home to secure his fifth goal of the campaign.

With his face bloodied, Cooper was subbed for Liam Palmer and left the field to a chorus of appreciation from the sold-out away end. Asked how he was doing after the knock, Wednesday boss Pedersen said: “Liam is Liam. He is Terry Butcher. He looks like him in the dressing room. But yeah, he is amazing. He is a warrior. But I think he is OK.”

The length of time taken to award the spot kick, which came as Cooper was down receiving treatment, irked the Huddersfield bench. Pedersen felt the decision - for a dangerously high foot - was the correct one.

“We spoke with the match referee, because there was a clear penalty,” he said. “There was a kick in his head and then in his face. So we keep on speaking with him, because the ref, he hasn't seen it. And the linesman, I think he has seen it. This is why there is linemen, there is a ref, they can help each other.”

One player substituted early who did not suffer injury was Kieran Morrison. Replaced at half-time by the influential Davis Keillor-Dunn, Pedersen confirmed that the loanee youngster was taken off for tactical reasons as Wednesday sought to gain a foothold in the game.

He said: “We need to be more controlled in the build-up, to be stronger here, to put more pressure. We need to be further down on the pitch. We need to have more deep runs.”
