Exclusive:Sheffield Wednesday representative heads to EFL meeting to vote for ownerless Owls
Sheffield Wednesday’s Finance Director, John Redgate, was chosen as the club’s representative for this week’s English Football League meeting.
Redgate, who has been with the Owls since 2015, has plenty of experience in the game having also spent time with Portsmouth prior to his lengthy spell at Hillsborough, headed through to the two-day EFL affair where a number of issues will be discussed among the member clubs.
One such issue is the topic of the Championship play-offs, with clubs expected to vote in favour of an expansion that would see seventh and eighth qualify for a one-legged ‘eliminator’ round against fifth and sixth, with the winners going on to face third and fourth over two legs. It’s a similar model to the one used in the National League, however in this case the top two will still gain automatic promotion.
The Championship play-offs could be expanded
As reported by The Independent, this vote will be with regards to expanding the play-offs as a principle, while the precise format will be determined ‘at a later stage’.
That vote is set to take place on Thursday morning, and will require a majority among all clubs, as well as a majority among Championship clubs, to be carried through. Other matters will also be discussed, including the current Profit and Sustainability Rules and more.

The Star understands that Redgate will vote on behalf of the Owls this week, but will do so after discussions with several other key figures at Wednesday in addition to the club’s administrators, Begbies Traynor.
Henrik Pedersen’s side will obviously not partake in next season’s Championship following their relegation to League One, but as a member of the Football League - and still part of the second tier as things stand - they have an important role to play alongside their counterparts.
The meeting got underway today, and is said to include addresses from David Kogan and Richard Monks, who are the chair and chief executive of the Independent Football Regulator.
