How Sheffield Wednesday internationals got on in latest round of fixtures - and who is playing today
Your latest Owls news...
Sheffield Wednesday continue to be represented on the international stage.
Club football has paused for the latest international break. The Owls’ next game is not for another week when they host Sunderland under-21s in the EFL Trophy on October 6. They then travel to Huddersfield Town four days later for their first league fixture in three weeks.
Wednesday’s players not away with their national teams have been given some days off to rest after a busy start to the season. But there will also be some hard work done on the training ground this week before they start preparing for the trip to Huddersfield.
The Owls had three players on international duty on Monday night in Sean Fusire, Kieran Morrison and Yan Valery, but only Fusire got some minutes. The 21-year-old came on at half-time in Zimbabwe’s 2-1 defeat to DR Congo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The defeat leaves Zimbabwe second in the group with three points from their first two games.
Elsewhere, Valery was an unused substitute for Tunisia in their 2-2 draw against Botswana, which was also an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Second-placed Tunisia have drawn both of their games in qualifying so far. They next play Mali in a friendly on Saturday.
Like Valery, Morrison also did not get on the pitch in Northern Ireland’s goalless draw against Hungary in the Nations League. The Green and White Army have made a good start, taking four points from two games. They play again on Friday against Ukraine and then host Georgia on Monday.
Meanwhile, young Owls striker Will Grainger could be in action today at 11am when Wales under-19s play USA in a friendly in Marbella. And Harry Gray could be involved this afternoon when England under-19s play Norway in a friendly at 3pm.
