Sheffield Wednesday injury prognosis on Billy Mitchell, Reece James and Ali Al-Hamadi as absences mount
Sheffield Wednesday’s list of player absences is growing.
Sheffield Wednesday look set to be without Sil Swinkels for the next three matches after his straight red card in their Sunday afternoon draw with Blackpool - with further injury concerns mounting.
Swinkels was making his first start for eight weeks after coming through a hamstring issue before he was sent off for a tussle with Tom Bloxham in the 40th minute. The moment proved seminal in the flow of the match, which extended Wednesday’s run to one win in eight. David Keillor-Dunn opened the scoring before former Owls loanee Jerry Yates levelled-up in the second half of what was an open game.
Wednesday were weakened from the off with absences to key players in Billy Mitchell, Ali Al-Hamadi and Reece James, each who will face periods out of different lengths. Speaking to The Star post-match, caretaker boss Matt Hamshaw explained after a tricky week that Mitchell was facing a short-term issue, though Al-Hamadi and James are facing longer spells out; James the longest.
Going down the list, Hamshaw said Mitchell was facing ‘one or two weeks’ out, Al-Hamadi “could be a number of weeks, but we're not 100% certain on that,” while James “could be four to six weeks potentially, dependent. But he just felt his groin, he's had a scan. That's where he is.”
Wednesday confirmed that Dave Challinor will take the reins moving forward. On the performance itself, Hamshaw expressed mixed emotions on how things played out, with an entertaining initial attacking display ultimately ending in another draw - the second of his two-match stint as caretaker boss.
“It was disappointing not to get three points. I thought first half were really good, played with a lot more intensity, a lot more bite, a lot more forward-thinking play. Obviously changed the shape slightly. I just thought we looked a real threat. I thought we were only going to be a matter of time before we get the second or third goals, and then we still obviously get sent off.
“I thought we handled the situation fairly well from then on in. There's a mistake, obviously, by the keeper for the goal, which is frustrating. But we all kind of make mistakes in life, don't we? It's just frustrating, really, that I think we should be sat here this week with six points.”
