Exclusive:Sheffield Wednesday interested in 22-year-old Hull City forward - ex-Sunderland and Chelsea
Sheffield Wednesday’s squad rebuild effort continues - with goals a central focus.
Sheffield Wednesday are interested in the signing of a forward whose goals helped Bolton Wanderers achieve promotion from League One last season, The Star understands.
The Owls are hunting firepower in the final third as their vast rebuild of the squad continues heading into an important campaign at third tier level. Areas of the squad look well-set but others require attention, with manager Henrik Pedersen making clear the signing of forwards and right-wingers are among the priorities.
That search has prompted Wednesday interest in Hull City’s former England youth international Mason Burstow, The Star understands, with some form of contact believed to have been made with the Tigers over a potential deal. The 22-year-old scored 12 times and registered five assists in the Trotters’ League One promotion effort last season as they were promoted to via the play-offs.
He was the main man in Bolton’s first half of the season and though he ultimately transitioned into more of an impact substitution after their loan signing of Celtic man Johnny Kenny in January, his goal involvement contributions remained regular throughout. Primarily a centre-forward, Burstow featured on both wings and as a second striker for Bolton.
A product of the Charlton Athletic academy with England under-20 caps to his name, Burstow was snapped-up by Chelsea as a teenager in 2022 and after an initial loan stint back at The Valley has since spent time on loan with Sunderland in the Championship. Hull, promoted to the Premier League last season, are busily adding to their squad and would sanction his exit - with a host of clubs believed to be interested in taking him on.
Wednesday are hoping to add a number of players to their squad as their rebuild continues, with discussions ongoing on a number of targets. The Star understands the club are operating close to an agreed EFL limit on transfer spending, which includes loan fees, though deals can be structured to take advantage of Wednesday’s ability to offer a strong wage contribution to parent clubs.
“Of course, we still need some offensive players,” Pedersen told media from the Owls’ Hungarian training camp last week. “We still need a nine. We still need a right-sided winger. We still need more players. Simon (Wilson), Kevin (Beadell), the coaches, we help each other. We are working very, very hard to to find some really, really good solutions. I'm really happy with the players we have got, and if we can keep this level, then it is looking very positive.”
