Fiery Henrik Pedersen offers passionate response to Sheffield Wednesday's flipped draw at Huddersfield Town

Sheffield Wednesday scored two late goals to claim a point at Huddersfield Town.

Any expectation that Sheffield Wednesday would have been more dominant offensively at Huddersfield Town does not pay enough dues to the quality of the home side, suggested Owls boss Henrik Pedersen following their 2-2 draw at the Accu Stadium.

Goals in the 88th and 98th minute earned Wednesday a point off the Terriers in a bizarre game that saw the Owls have to wait 58 minutes before their first effort on goal - and then launch a 15-shot onslaught in the final half hour to outstrip their fellow promotion hunters in just about every attacking metric.

The result comes as the latest show of mettle from an Owls side that by Pedersen’s own admission has not shown consistent performance levels over the last few weeks. Asked about the sustainability of a run that sees them move to eight matches unbeaten across all competitions and on the balance of results against performance, the Danish coach conceded that while the quality shown in possession was not good enough in the first half, it perhaps doesn’t pay enough respect to Huddersfield.

“I don't know what people expect to go to Huddersfield,” he said. “I think it's to have no respect for Huddersfield to think that we can come here and be dominant for 90 minutes. If you see Huddersfield's game, it's a really strong team. If we go, ‘We are not happy with our offensive game against a strong defensive team’, then I think there are many teams that go from a game in Huddersfield that are not.

“We have big ambitions. And we want to be better, especially in the first half. It was not good enough. Defensively, it was fine. It was not dominant, but it was solid. Because they played a lot of long balls. And then the second ball and the transition, they are very, very strong. And then I think how we grow in the second half and then be so dominant in an away game in Huddersfield, I think it's very, very positive.”

Wednesday are in the early stages of a major rebuild stage after an influx of players over the summer. Pedersen and a number of players have warned of the need to see a ‘gelling’ period, though supporters appear to be growing increasingly nervous about the time it is taking to lay on consistent performances in attack. Banging his fist on the table and offering a passionate response to questioning in his post-match press conference, the Owls boss reiterated those themes and praised the culture shown in the side to keep battling on to results.

He continued: “I think to form a team, from forming to creating a team, there is also a storming phase. And in this storming phase, you have the chance to show who you really are, and I think the boys are growing a lot together right now. And how they don't fall apart from each other when things are not right, it tells you that we have a strong, strong culture.

“We all know that it's not perfect, but we cannot expect it to be perfect already now. We are very, very conscious about the first half, but we are also very conscious about the things we did well in the second half, and this is what we want to have more of. And then I'm also conscious that we have a group of players who don't give up, and they have never been given up.

“Now we have played how many games and lost one. It is strong always to find a way. And we have to, again, I say, please respect this Huddersfield team. It's a very strong team, a very strong team. And to go here and to expect that we can play dream football from minute one to the last minute is naive and stupid, because it's a good team.

“We want to raise the bar for everything we want in the first half. And then we make this big, big mistake in the second, but how the boys reacted to this is strong. It's strong, and this tells us that we have good characters and we have a strong culture in our team.”
